ACU hosted the CBS Insurance Classic softball tournament
and competed against several nationally ranked softball teams in the country. ACU finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and upped their overall record to 7-3.
ACU began the tournament Thursday with their toughest two opponents of the season. They successfully beat No. 11 Emporia State 12-4, but ACU lost its second game to No. 9 St. Mary's. The Rattlers beat the Wildcats 3-1.
"We feel that at the St. Mary's game we let that out of our grasp," said head coach Chantiel Wilson.
ACU split its second day of the tournament on Friday after another win and another loss.
The Wildcats beat Cameron University 9-4. ACU dominated the game and held a 6-0 lead by the end of the third inning. Outfielder Shelby McElvain and catcher Jessica Shiery led the
way by increasing their team's score with home runs.
Southeastern Oklahoma State defeated ACU 8-2 after Marjorie Johnson slowed down the Wildcats' bats by striking out 14 ACU batters in seven innings of work.
"We lost because we simply didn't hit the ball well enough to win," Wilson said.
ACU ended its tournament on a high note Saturday with a 9-8 win over Northeastern State.
Toward the end of the fifth inning, ACU was behind 8-5, but they caught up in the seventh inning and won 9-8.
Wilson said her favorite game from this past weekend was ACU's win over Emporia State. She said she believes her team exemplified true skill by coming back against Emporia and again against Northeastern.
"It showed that this team doesn't get down a lot when we're behind," Wilson said. "We have seven innings in a game, and we'll find a way to win."
Wilson said her team's strongest tool of achievement this weekend was their pitching.
"Our pitching was key this weekend," Wilson said. "Our success this past weekend and this season was [the] things we did well - pitching, defense and hitting."
ACU is back in action at home in a doubleheader on Feb. 14, against Cameron.
