ACU engaged in a tough weekend against Incarnate Word and St. Mary's University.

The Wildcats ended Saturday with a doubleheader split against Incarnate Word in San Antonio. ACU lost their first game to the Lady Cardinals 6- 5. Because of a powerful home run by junior catcher Jessica Shiery and senior center fielder Liesha Johnson, the Wildcats won 8-3 in game two.

On Sunday, ACU fell twice to No. 9 nationally ranked St.
Mary's University, scoring 8-0 in the first game and 5-1 in the second game. The Rattlers' unrelenting pitchers allowed only 10 hits and one run, that was scored by senior designated hitter Jessica Johnson.

Johnson said the Wildcats' main weaknesses are not being
able to hit the ball and gain runs.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be successful on the plate. That's where we're lacking," Johnson said. "You can't win games unless you score runs. That's where our main improvement needs to come is consistency at the plate for our entire line up."

The Wildcats fell to 9-9 in the season, while St. Mary's rose to 18-4.

Head coach Chantiel Wilson said this weekend was "disappointing." She said her team had the capability to come out with more than one win.

"Both of the teams we played were good, but we didn't play to our potential," Wilson said.

Wilson said her team's shortcomings came in their lack of focus and drive during each game.

"I don't think we had 100 percent focus while we're on the field," Wilson said. "No one stepped up."

She said she hopes her team can overcome their struggles
from this past weekend in order to prepare for their next game against Cameron.

"I guess I think they can improve on their focus on the game and just try to stay intense throughout the whole game," Wilson said.

Johnson claims this weekend was rather "rough." "We struggled, and I think that's what softball is," Johnson said. "As a team, you pull together for success to step up to the plate. It wasn't our weekend. We just didn't have the game on our side."

Johnson believes this weekend was a defining moment for her team and will help bring unity in the end.

"We really need to start making it for ourselves and creating our own destiny, in a way, and our own opportunity," Johnson said. "It was just a rough patch. It's how we respond to this weekend that will make or break our season."

The Wildcats will play a doubleheader against Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., on Saturday.
